Support our Pledge: Show your Commitment to Children and Families

Call on your MEPs to show their commitment to children and families

Tweet or email your MEPs to tell them you want them to ensure no child has to grow up in an institution.

In May people across Europe voted for their representatives in the European Parliament. The new and re-elected Members of the European Parliament (MEPs) started work on 1 July.  Now is the time to call on them to make a commitment to children and families worldwide by working to end institutionalisation. You can help us with this.

We want as many MEPs as possible to support our pledge, which commits them to work to end the use of institutions for children in Europe and across the world, and to ensure EU funding is always used for family and community-based care.

The more people ask their MEPs to show their commitment to children and families, the greater is the chance that they will listen.

Lumos won the support of a number of MEPs in the previous Parliament, which helped to ensure the EU decided that funding should not be spent on institutions, but on improving community-based care. Gaining the support of MEPs in the new Parliament will help us make a difference not only for children in institutions in Europe, but for children in institutions worldwide.

Your victory

Thank you to the many thousands of you who signed our online petition to ensure that European Union money will no longer be spent on institutions for children. Together we have won our first victory.

For the first time in history the European Union (EU) has put regulations in place which make it clear that EU Structural Funds should be spent on the transition from institutional to community based care. This regulation will come into force on 1 January 2014 and will last for seven years. This is a significant achievement that will benefit hundreds of thousands of children in Europe and you helped to make it happen.

We took your petition and told Members of the European Parliament about your support for ending the institutionalisation of children. We believe that this helped them to stand firm during difficult negotiations. We also told the Presidency of the Council of the European Union that many thousands of you wanted the EU to use its money wisely and hep to ensure that all children can grow up in loving families. We believe that your voices helped to convince the Presidency and other important players.

Thank you for all your support.

Despite this victory our work is not quite done. We have discovered a loophole in the new regulation on EU Structural Funds. We are concerned that this loophole will allow countries in the EU to regard the closure of institutions for children and the establishment of good quality community and family based services as a ‘preferred option’ rather than a legal obligation.  If you want to read more about our concerns please click here

We will keep working hard to close this last loophole and to monitor how countries spend the money they receive from the EU. To find out how you can continue to support our work please click here.
