Who we are
We want to realise every child’s right to a family by transforming care systems around the world.
Our vision
Our vision is a world in which all children grow up in safe and loving families
Our core values shape the work that we do. We are:
- Child-focused: Children always come first in our work. We place the rights and needs of children and their safety, protection and well-being at the centre of everything we do.
- Accountable: We take responsibility for our actions when carrying out our programmes, exercising great care in the use of our resources and seeking to deploy them to maximum effect, always considering the consequences and impact on children.
- Transformative: We support change to create a positive and sustainable difference to the lives of children, and transformation that brings lasting benefits.
- Inclusive: We aim to ensure access to opportunities for everyone. We endeavour to operate in open and honest ways in both our internal and external relationships, developing and delivering flexible approaches that address the needs of all. We involve young people both in matters that affect them and in our advocacy activities.

Lumos’ equality, diversity and inclusion (EDI) statement
At Lumos, we fight for every child’s right to a family by preventing family separation, protecting children and promoting the transformation of care systems around the world. We do this without discrimination, upholding the rights of every child. The children we work with are disproportionately likely to experience inequality and exclusion, so it is vital that our work be rooted in anti-discriminatory practice. This means ensuring that no child is deprived of help regardless of age, sex, disability, gender identity or expression, race, religion, sexual orientation, or economic status.
We strive to create an inclusive environment where all our staff feel safe, heard and valued. We respect and value the diverse perspectives of our employees and we ensure the freedom of expression of all individuals. This provides the foundation for delivering on our vision of ensuring that all children have a safe and loving family.
The five pillars of Lumos’ EDI statement
These pillars are based on Lumos’ core values.
Lumos embraces collaboration across the organisation and with partners. We believe working together leads to positive outcomes for everyone. We strive to find new ways to work together because we are determined to continuously learn, expand and improve. Lumos acknowledges our privileged position within the sector as an organisation in the global North with significant resources and we seek to work with, learn from and support individuals and organisations with diverse expertise. We nurture a spirit of curiosity and openness, always seeking out new ideas and diverse views and perspectives.
Lumos strives for excellence in all that we do. We take pride in our professionalism – we have high standards, push ourselves to be better, and expect the same of others. In order to make a real impact on the lives of those we support, we acknowledge the importance of investing in our people, resources and processes. We know that there is strength in diversity, and we commit to undertaking the work required to ensure our staff, contractors and partners come from a wide variety of backgrounds, reflective of the diverse communities we serve.
We believe in respect, equality and inclusion for all. We value the experience and knowledge of others, seek to understand alternative opinions and celebrate our differences. We are committed to fighting injustice and discrimination, ensuring respect and dignity for all. We strive to foster a culture of inclusion to ensure that everyone we work with feels confident to be themselves.
Care and empathy are core values for Lumos and our work. These values also make us more effective. Lumos recognises that discrimination and exclusion, both at the individual and systemic level, cause harm. In all that we do, Lumos is committed to providing meaningful care and support to ensure that everyone has a voice and is listened to, including the staff, children, families and communities with whom we work.
We are motivated and determined to fight for every child’s right to grow up in a safe and loving family. To meet this aim and to live our EDI values, we are passionate about continually educating ourselves on key issues including racisms, poverty, colonialism, disability, transphobia, homophobia and other forms of inequality and discrimination.
